Prioritizing Wellness Through Mindfulness

August is National Wellness Month, a time to slow down and prioritize your health and wellbeing. With busy schedules and lists of priorities, wellness can often take a back seat. But this month allows us to reflect on our daily habits that support long-term wellbeing. We should ask ourselves: what does wellness look like for me, and how am I nurturing it?

One way to support wellness in our fast-paced world is through the practice of mindfulness. At its core, mindfulness is simply the practice of being present in the current moment and paying attention to what is happening around us without judgement.

It can start with one moment of noticing how you’re feeling before rushing into the next task.

One minute of silence.

One deep breath.

For example, you could try diaphragmatic breathing (deep belly breaths) and box breathing (inhaling, holding, exhaling, and holding for equal counts). These simple practices are powerful tools for calming the nervous system, reminders to slow down, and can be implemented into your daily routine.

Everyday moments like showering, eating, driving, and walking can become mindfulness practices when you engage with them.

Notice the warmth of the water on your skin.

Taste each bite of your meal.

Turn off the music in the car for a few minutes and observe your breath or surroundings.

Feel your feet touching the ground as you walk.

Consider taking a walk outside. (Exposure to nature has been linked to better sleep, lower blood pressure, and increased positive emotions.)

These micro moments of awareness offer clarity and calmness and can be embedded as you navigate National Wellness Month.  Even a few moments of stillness can have a ripple effect. Take time to check in with yourself and create space for your well being. Mindfulness is about being present, and the more present we are, the more connected and resilient we become.
