What is Mindfulness?

In recent years, mindfulness has been popularized on radio, television, magazines and books.  Over 25 million Americans engage in some kind of practice today, and it is being offered in a wide array of professional settings, including business, law, medicine, healthcare, the military, veterans, education, professional sports and the non-profit sector. How exactly does it work?  Does it do any good?

Researchers define mindfulness as:  “The nonjudgmental attention to and awareness of one’s physical, mental and emotional experiences in the present moment.”  Mindfulness is simply the capacity to be aware.  It is the ability to be fully present with whatever the here and now is presenting to us– whether pleasant or unpleasant. This fundamental human capacity is essential to any sphere of learning and can be cultivated and developed systematically through training and guidance.
